Since golf cart batteries are classified as hazardous waste, disposing the old batteries is very important. It should be disposed properly. These batteries are of lead-acid type. They have corrosive properties and contain toxic heavy metals and hence not suitable for disposal as solid wastes. If not handled properly, the sulphuric acid in the worn out battery can be toxic. The improper disposal can pollute water and soil. Since the toxic material is insoluble in water, and will not get decay, or burn, it becomes more dangerous. On contact, humans may develop irritability, stomachache, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. The right way or practices to dispose old batteries are not to dump with your household recyclables and leave it for municipality. Take the spent battery to an auto spare parts dealer, who in turn may give it to a person who is committed to battery recycling.  Recyclers crush the batteries into small pieces and then segregate the plastic parts. The plastic parts will be sent to a reprocessor who makes new plastic products out of it and the purified lead will be given to battery manufacturers. Otherwise, you can leave the old battery with the same supplier who supplies new golf cart battery. One can contact local municipality also for a safe and proper disposal.
